Tahiti Tiki

There are a quite a few highly skilled artists, craftsmen, tattooists, and other creative minds at work on Tahiti.

This is their page...

You can read about them here, or meet them and experience their unique arts and crafts by visiting their homes and galleries on Tahiti, some of them in the city of Papeete, and others scattered around the island.

Unique Artists, Craftsmen & Specialists

Tahiti Island proper and Tahiti-Nui definately have their share of unique artists and craftsmen for an island the size of Tahiti. The sheer number of outlets and galleries to sell their wares assure Tahiti it's place in the art world...

In all reality, since the island of Tahiti has the most people of all the islands, it probably also has the highest amount of artists per capita and is the recognized "art capital" of French Polynesia.

The majority of these artists sell their work in the city of Papeete, at some outlet, gallery, or other source, but there are also a number of them that stick to the various "art colonies" around the island.

Here's a list of artists on the island.

Also not to be overlooked are the various artists and craftsmen on the smaller, outerlying islands. Be sure and read about them as you click around TST'S other "TO SEE" pages.

Galleries & Boutiues

There are a few good art galleries, shops and boutiques, and exhibits on Tahiti island. Here, we list a number of interesting places OUTSIDE OF THE CITY LIMITS OF PAPEETE.

HALVERSON WORKSHOP
PK 3, Afaahiti, PO. Box 7231 Taravao- Tahiti, Telephone- (689) 57.72.56, Bronze sculptures and paintings.

ATELIER TIAMA'O
PK 29 , Papara- TAHITI, Telephone- (689) 57.34.82
Creations by the owner. Vases, wooden lamps, fruit platters.

(Outside of these few exceptions, most of the highest quality galleries are located within the city of Papeete, so we refer you to our special PAPEETE CITY ART page for the complete urban listings.)

Arts & Crafts Centers

Although there is a fairly active arts community throughout Tahiti, TST readily admits at this point it isn't very well informed of current showings, exhibits, etc.

Here's what we DO know: Frequent art exhibits are held at the Town Hall (Mairie) in downtown Papeete and also in Punaauia, the House of Culture, the Museaum of Tahiti and her islands, as well as the larger hotel resorts of Tahiti.

For now, we recommend calling or faxing the galleries below for information or consulting with your hotel or the tourism bureau for specific exhibit times...

Tattoo Artists

An important part of the culture of the Polynesian islands is tattooing. South Pacific Islanders have been decorating their bodies with symbolistic art for many hundreds of years, if not thousands...Tahiti Tattoos

In fact, it's popularly believed among historians that the first and oldest Tattoos known to man were from the South Pacific Islands, (probably the Marquesas).

Today's Polynesian tattoo specialists benefit from the new and safe techniques of modern tattooing, yet most are proud to continue working with the traditional art motifs and themes of their ancestors. This makes for unique tattooing.

If you've ever wanted a tattoo, Tahiti is certainly a great place to get a unique one... Work with one of these tattoo artists on something that means something special to your life.
