There are a quite a few highly skilled artists, craftsmen, tattooists, and other creative minds at work in Papeete, French Polynesia's Capital City.

This is their page...

You can read about them here, or meet them and experience their unique arts and crafts by visiting their homes and galleries on Tahiti, some of them in the city of Papeete, and others scattered around the island.

***See our additional section for ARTISTS, CRAFTSMEN & OTHER SPECIALISTS OUTSIDE THE CITY OF PAPEETE***

Unique Artists, Craftsmen & Specialists

Papeete is the art center of French Polynesia. With it's sheer numbers of people living within its borders and the various distribution points it's urban setting offers, most artists working on the island have some kind of an outlet located within the city to show and sell their wares.

Although there are many working artists, there are always a few that stand out from the rest...

Here, we list some of the more interesting artists living, working, or having businesses in Papeete.

(Don't miss our complimentary ARTISTS, CRAFTSMEN, and OTHER SPECIALISTS OUTSIDE the PAPEETE CITY LIMITS section.)

Also not to be overlooked are the various artists and craftsmen on the smaller, outerlying islands. Be sure and read about them as you click around TST'S other "TO SEE/ Arts" pages.

TST Comment:
Although there is a fairly active arts community throughout Tahiti, TST readily admits at this point it isn't very well informed of current showings, exhibits, etc. Here's what we DO know: Frequent art exhibits are held at the Town Hall (Mairie) in downtown Papeete and also in Punaauia, the House of Culture, the Museaum of Tahiti and her islands, as well as the larger hotel resorts of Tahiti. For now, we recommend calling or faxing the galleries below for information or consulting with your hotel or the tourism bureau for specific exhibit times.

Galleries & Boutiques

Most of Tahiti's art galleries are located WITHING THE CITY OF PAPEETE. For many of them, theres not really a distinction between a "gallery" and a boutique that sells arts and crafts.

The point to make here is that all of the below listed places stand out from the rest of Papeete's stores and shops because they ONLY sell arts, crafts and collectables.

Their focus IS the art of French Polynesia, not just basic handycrafts as you will find most shops in Papeete carry to some degree or another. These places are definately worth a good look:

Tattoo Artists in Papeete

An important part of the culture of the Polynesian islands is tattooing. South Pacific Islanders have been decorating their bodies with symbolistic art for many hundreds of years, if not thousands...Polynesian Tattoo design

In fact, it's popularly believed among historians that the first and oldest Tattoos known to man were from the South Pacific Islands, (probably the Marquesas).

Today's Polynesian tattoo specialists benefit from the new and safe techniques of modern tattooing, yet most are proud to continue working with the traditional art motifs and themes of their ancestors. This makes for unique tattooing.

If you've ever wanted a tattoo, Tahiti is certainly a great place to get a unique one, and the city of Papeete offers the largest selection of working Tattoo artists in French Polynesia. Work with one of these tattoo artists on something that means something special to your life.
