Papeete is an interesting city to explore for a few days or more. Excellent shopping, museums, and sightseeing tours are just a few of your options. ***Don't miss our TAHITI ISLAND GENERAL SIGHTSEEING & POINTS OF INTEREST- pertaining to the island of Tahiti overall*** Most
of Tahiti's museums are located OUTSIDE of Papeete's city limits and
worth checking out if you're a museum buff. Here we list an excellent museum located
within easy walking distance to most of Papeete's downtown area.

(For information on the MUSEUMS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE CITY OF PAPEETE, please see our comprehensive island section.)
Papeete has a daily market place open to the public for shopping and buying groceries.
This market, locally known as "Le Marche", is in a sense, the heart of the city. It has become a tourist and traveler's sightseeing favorite due to its brightly colored vendors and attractive Tahitian products. Wander among the many stands and displays to find such products as
luscious ripe fruits and vegetables, monoi oils and scented soaps, vanilla beans, cakes and pies, fruit preserves, dancing costumes and clothing, woven hats and bags and shell necklaces. 2 floors worth of vendors, including the finest display of floral arrangements of orchids, and anthuriums, marigolds and daisys and other flowers you will ever see.
Located in the heart of Papeete, just one block inland from the center of the waterfront, it's not hard to find.
Open daily from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm, the best times to see it are always early in the morning, especially on Sundays, and also at around 4:00 pm daily when the local fisherman bring in the fresh fish.
Papeete has a few interesting cathedrals
to visit for those interested in religious arts and the churches of Tahiti. The
church plays an important role in Polynesian society, as a good percentage of
all Tahitians are quite religious. (Read more about the religions and culture
of Tahiti in our "ABOUT" Section- Society
and Culture).
